French Bulldog

AVERAGE LIFE SPAN:  10-12 years

The French Bulldog has become extremely popular in the UK in recent years. The ‘Frenchie’ is a medium to small sized dog with a brachycephalic skull, (short, squashed muzzle). He has quite bulbous eyes and pointed ears and his tail curls over the back.

Frenchies come in a variety of colours from blue, to black, black and white, red and brindle. The coat is short and needs very little maintenance. Frenchies are adorable little dogs that make fantastic pets and family dogs. Easy to train, they love to be with their owners and possess a rather clown like, comical attitude to life.

They can be willful and stubborn, so firm and correct handling from the beginning is vital. Descending from the bull breeds he would have originally been bred for bull baiting but has since been bred as a companion dog for hundreds of years.

They need a minimum amount of exercise, just daily walks and care should be taken during hot weather as they are unable to regulate their temperature and are prone to heat stroke. Due to their flat noses the Frenchie is not a swimmer.

Temperament wise they are considered to be kind dogs who can be extremely patient with children. Due to its eye confirmation the Frenchie can be prone to eye problems such as entropian. This breed also has difficulty in giving birth naturally and litters are therefore, usually born via cesarean. The Frenchie’s life span is between 10 to 12 years.
